Early Life and Education

Eva Melander was born on December 25, 1974, in Gävle, Sweden. Growing up, she spent her childhood wandering along the Baltic Sea coastline, unaware of her future path in acting. However, her perspective shifted over time, and she enrolled in Malmö University's Faculty of Arts after completing high school. Melander honed her craft at the Theatre Academy and performed on the stage of Södran. She also pursued short courses in film history.

Theatre and Film

As part of Lund University, the Theatre Academy has a reputation for fostering young actors and dramatists in Sweden. Eva performed at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm and Riksteatern. She credits this period as pivotal in her career development, as she delved into specialized literature and connected with aspiring directors. Melander's screen debut came in 2004 with a minor role in the television series "Graven." During this time, she prioritized theater while occasionally appearing in films. The slender actress (5'6") ventured into radio hosting before returning to acting full-time.

Breakthrough with "Border"

In 2010, Babak Najafi's film "Sebbe" premiered, featuring Eva as the alcoholic mother of the protagonist. She went on to star in several short films and television series, including "The Bridge," before her standout performance in the 2018 thriller "Border." Directed by Ali Abbasi, the film cast Melander as a young customs officer with an extraordinary sense of smell and an unconventional appearance. The film garnered critical acclaim, winning awards at Cannes and Los Angeles film festivals, and resonated with audiences in Scandinavia for its references to folklore.

The Transformation for "Border"

Filming "Border" presented significant challenges for Eva. Daily makeup sessions beginning at 4 am were required due to the elaborate prosthetics. The process took a toll on her, leading to irritability. She sought solace in meditation to cope with the stress: "I worked over 15 hours a day: four hours of makeup, ten hours of shooting, and an hour to take it all off." Before securing the role, she was required to gain muscle mass, as her character possessed broad shoulders. Melander's weight increased by 18 kg, and a specific meal plan was designed for her, requiring her to eat every 90 minutes. She also underwent intensive gym sessions four times a week with a personal trainer.

Continued Success

Despite the grueling makeup process, Eva embraced the transformation and conveyed a wide emotional range, complemented by the evocative soundtrack. Abbasi praised his cast and singled out the synergy between Melander and Eero Milonoff as one of the strongest acting duos in Scandinavia. In 2021, the Netflix series "The Unlikely Murderer" saw Eva portray the mother of Stig Engström, a suspect in the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme. Melander's lengthy makeup sessions continued, but she joked that after "Border," the process no longer held fear. The series sparked controversy for its allegations, facing criticism from professional criminologists for misrepresenting key details.

Personal Life and Activism

Eva Melander remained private about her romantic life in her younger years. She desired children later in life, but her attempts at conception proved unsuccessful. However, when she and her partner had come to terms with their childlessness, Eva became pregnant at the age of 46. In 2021, she welcomed a son named Idris. Melander relishes motherhood and feels rejuvenated by the experience. Influenced by her husband, she actively participates in social activism, using social media to advocate against racism and support Black Lives Matter. She also supports wildlife conservation charities. As an avid skier, Eva suffered a serious childhood injury that temporarily impaired her gait.

Present Projects

Eva Melander continues to be active in the entertainment industry. She recently appeared in the miniseries "The Agreement." She also starred in the film "UFO Sweden," alongside Inès Dal Tuhaug and Jesper Barkselius, which tells the story of a group of Swedish ufologists aiding a woman in search of her father. The film was released in Russia in spring 2023.
