Biography of Evelyn Keyes
Evelyn Keyes was an American actress known for her career in the film industry. She was born in the small town of Port Arthur, Texas. In her youth, she performed in a church choir and at the age of 18, she signed a contract with producer Cecil DeMille for film roles. Initially, she played several minor roles in "B-movies" at Paramount Pictures, but in 1939, she landed her most famous role as Suellen O'Hara, Scarlett's sister, in the film "Gone with the Wind". Her most memorable role came in 1955, in the film "The Seven Year Itch", where she portrayed Helen Sherman alongside Marilyn Monroe. In 1956, Evelyn left the film industry, only returning to the screen a few times in small roles in both films and TV series. In 1977, she published her autobiography, "Scarlett's Sister: My Strong Life in Hollywood and Beyond".
Marriages and Personal Life
Evelyn Keyes was married four times. Her first husband was Barton Bainbridge (1938-1940), who passed away. She then married director Charles Vidor in 1943, but their marriage ended in divorce in 1945. Her third husband was actor and director John Huston (1946-1950), with whom she adopted a Mexican child named Pablo. Finally, she married musician Artie Shaw in 1957, but they divorced in 1985. Evelyn passed away from cancer on July 4, 2008, at her home in Montecito, near Santa Barbara. However, her death was only announced by her relatives a week later.
