Swedish General and Governor
Evert Horn was a Swedish military commander who held the positions of Governor of Narva, Jama, Koporye, and Ivangorod. He was a member of the junior branch of the Horn noble family and the brother of Gustaf Horn.
Early Career
Horn participated in the Swedish auxiliary corps' march into Russia from 1609 to 1610. He later fought in the Russo-Swedish War of 1610-1617. From the outset of the campaign, Horn distinguished himself as a commander. He led the vanguard of combined Swedish-Russian forces with Fyodor Chulkov and defeated the Polish-Lithuanian forces at Staraya Russa, Porkhov, Oreshek, and Toropets. This was followed by a victory over a numerically superior enemy at Torzhok.
Swedish Intervention and Promotion
During the Swedish intervention that followed the Battle of Klushino and the overthrow of Tsar Shuisky, Horn's career skyrocketed. He was promoted to Colonel in 1612 and to Field Marshal in 1614. During the absence of Jacob De la Gardie in the winter of 1614-1615, Horn commanded the Swedish military administration in Novgorod.
Siege of Pskov and Death
Horn was mortally wounded during the siege of Pskov on July 30, 1615. He was buried in Turku Cathedral.
