Early Life and ServiceHacı Gazi Evrenos Bey, also known as Evren, was born in the Balıkesir province of the Karesi beylik around 1330 (or 1288, according to traditional dating). He initially served the rulers of Karesi until 1361, when the beylik was conquered by Orhan Gazi. Subsequently, Evrenos joined the Ottoman service.
Military Triumphs
Evrenos emerged as one of the most renowned Ottoman military leaders during the conquest of the Balkan Peninsula. He served under four sultans: Orhan I, Murad I, Bayezid I, and Mehmed I. As commander of the left wing in the Battle of Chernomen (1371), he played a pivotal role in Ottoman victories.
Conquests and Rewards
After Chernomen, Evrenos led the conquest of Gümürcüne, Serres, Doyran, Prilep, Skopje, and Prizren. In recognition of his exploits, he was granted the uj (fiefdom) around Skopje. He also participated in the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396.
Later Years and Legacy
Evrenos died around 1400 (or 1417, according to traditional dating) in Yenice-Vardar (present-day Greece). In 1419, his remains were buried in a mausoleum that still stands today.
Establishment of a Dynasty
Evrenos established a vast waqf (religious endowment) based on his extensive lands. These waqfs remained in the possession of his descendants, the Evrenosoglu family, until the First Balkan War (1912-1913).
