Biography of Fabio Mastrangelo
Fabio Mastrangelo is an Italian conductor and pianist. He was born in 1965 in the city of Bari into a musical family. Mastrangelo received his first musical education at the piano faculty of the Niccolo Piccinni Conservatory in Bari, studying under Pierluigi Camicià. During his years of study, he won national piano competitions in Osimo (1980) and Rome (1986). He furthered his education at the Geneva Conservatory with Maria Tipo and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He also attended masterclasses with Aldo Ciccolini, Seymour Lipkin, and Paul Badura-Skoda.
Conducting Career
Mastrangelo studied conducting with Gilberto Serembe at the Music Academy in Pescara, as well as with L. Bernstein and K. Österreicher in Vienna and at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He also attended masterclasses with Neeme Järvi and Jorma Panula. In 1990, Mastrangelo received a scholarship to study at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, where he later led the chamber orchestra "Toronto Virtuosi" and the string orchestra at Hart House. He later taught conducting at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto.
Mastrangelo is a laureate of the international competitions for young conductors "Mario Guzella - 1993," "Mario Guzella - 1995" in Pescara, and "Donatella Flick - 2000" in London. He has collaborated as a guest conductor with numerous orchestras, including the National Academy Orchestra in Hamilton, the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, the Brantford Symphony Orchestra, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, the Szeged Symphony Orchestra in Hungary, the Pärnu Symphony Orchestra in Estonia, the Vienna Festival String Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, the "Symphonietta Riga" Orchestra in Latvia, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine in Kyiv, and the philharmonic orchestras of Tampere in Finland, Bacau in Romania, and Nice in France.
In 1997, Mastrangelo became the conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the Province of Bari and conducted orchestras in Taranto, Palermo, and Pescara, as well as the Philharmonic Orchestra of Rome. He served as the musical director of the Società dei Concerti Orchestra in Bari for two seasons (2005-2007) and toured Japan with the orchestra twice. Mastrangelo currently performs with the Vilnius Symphony Orchestra, the Arena di Verona Theatre Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and Moscow Philharmonic orchestras, the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg State Capella Orchestra, and orchestras in Nizhny Novgorod and Yekaterinburg, among others. From 2001 to 2006, Mastrangelo was the artistic director of the international festival "Stars of Château de Chailly" in France. As an opera conductor, Mastrangelo has collaborated with the National Opera Theatre in Rome ("Aida," 2009) and the theatres of St. Petersburg and Voronezh. Since 2006, he has been the principal guest conductor of the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, the youngest opera house in Italy, which has recently been included in the list of the most prestigious theatres alongside Milan's La Scala. In the summer of 2008, Mastrangelo opened the festival in Taormina, Sicily, with a new production of "Aida," and in December 2009, he made his debut at the opera theatre in Sassari, Italy, with a new production of "Lucia di Lammermoor."
Mastrangelo made his conducting debut at the Mariinsky Theatre with "Tosca" featuring Maria Guleghina and Vladimir Galuzin (2007), followed by his first appearance at the Stars of the White Nights Festival (2008). He collaborates with the Naxos recording studio, with whom he has recorded all the symphonic works of Elizabeth Bruzdowicz (2 CDs). As a pianist, Mastrangelo continues to actively perform concerts in Italy, Canada, the United States, and Russia.
