Fatal Naegleria Fowleri Infection Claims Surfer's Life

Surf Enthusiast Succumbs to Flesh-Eating Amoeba

Fabrizio Stabile, a 29-year-old surfer from New Jersey, contracted the deadly Naegleria fowleri amoeba while visiting BSR Cable Park in Waco, Texas, in early September 2018. The young man fell ill upon returning home and sought medical help, but all efforts to save his life were in vain. Stabile passed away on September 21 due to complications from the parasitic organism, which causes a rare and devastating brain infection.

Environmental Investigation Launched

According to a GoFundMe page set up for Stabile, he became the victim of the Naegleria fowleri amoeba, which has reportedly only been diagnosed in 143 people in the United States over the past 55 years. Following the infection, the surfer endured excruciating headaches that defied treatment. The severity of his symptoms and his deteriorating speech patterns led to a diagnosis of bacterial meningitis, but no medication could provide relief. Further extensive testing revealed the presence of the Naegleria fowleri amoeba, a pathogen with a 98% mortality rate.

Public Health Response

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised that the dangerous organism can enter the body through the nose when contaminated water is inhaled and can spread throughout the body. In the wake of Stabile's passing, the McLennan County Health District initiated a thorough investigation to identify and address the source of the brain-eating amoeba in the wave pool.

Park Closure and Cooperation

BSR Cable Park owner Stuart Parson has made the decision to temporarily shut down the facility. Parson is reportedly cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
