Early Life and Family
Fehmida Mirza was born on December 20, 1956, into a wealthy family in Sindh Province. Her father, the late Kazi Abdul Majid Abid, was a pioneer of modern Sindhi journalism and a federal minister during former Prime Minister Muhammad Khan Junejo's tenure.
Political Career
National Assembly Speaker (2008-2013)On March 19, 2008, Mirza became Pakistan's first female Speaker of the National Assembly. She was the first woman to hold such a high-ranking position in the country's governance after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. Mirza was supported by 249 out of 342 legislators and aligned with President Asif Ali Zardari's policies.
Re-Election and Political Shifts
Mirza was re-elected to the National Assembly in 2013. In May 2018, she left the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), citing the party's neglect of her district, Badin. She joined the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) in June 2018.
Federal Minister for Interprovincial Coordination
Since August 20, 2018, Mirza has served as the Federal Minister for Interprovincial Coordination. She is responsible for fostering cooperation and coordination among Pakistan's provinces.
Personal Life
Mirza is married to Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza, who served as Sindh's Home Minister in 2008. They have four children: two sons and two daughters.
