Faust Vrancic: Croatian Renaissance Polymath

Faust Vrancic was a Croatian scientist and polymath of the late Renaissance era. He is renowned for being the first individual to successfully test a parachute.

The Polyglot

In 1595, Vrancic published "Dictionarium quinque nobilissimarum Europeae linguarum," the first dictionary to include five languages: Latin, Italian, German, Dalmatian, and Hungarian. In 1605, Bohemian Benedictine Peter Loderecker expanded the dictionary to include Czech and Polish.

The Pioneer of Parachuting

While the concept of the parachute has ancient Eastern origins, Vrancic was the first European to successfully experiment with it. Inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's sketches, he assembled a model parachute and tested it in 1617, at the age of 65. According to legend, he leaped from an 86-meter-high bell tower in Bratislava using a 6x6-meter fabric stretched over a wooden frame. He repeated the stunt several times, notably in Venice, becoming a pioneer of base jumping.

The Architect of Suspended Bridges

Vrancic also designed the first plans for an iron suspension bridge. However, such bridges were not constructed until the 18th century.
