Early Life and Education

Fazıl Hüsnü Dağlarca was born to Hasan Hüsnü Bey, a lieutenant colonel of cavalry. He completed his primary education in Konya, Kayseri, Adana, and Kozan. He continued his education at the Kuleli Military High School in 1933 after completing high school in Tarsus and Adana.

Military Service and Early Career

In 1935, Dağlarca joined the army as an infantry officer. He traveled extensively throughout Eastern and Central Anatolia as well as European Turkey. After serving in the military for fifteen years, he retired from the army in 1950 with the rank of Senior Captain. From 1952 to 1960, he worked as a labor inspector for the Ministry of Labor in Istanbul.

Publishing and Literary Work

After leaving the Ministry of Labor, Dağlarca opened a bookstore in Aksaray and pursued a career in publishing. He published a monthly magazine called "Turkish Language" for four years (January 1960 - July 1964).

Dağlarca's first published work was a short story in the newspaper "New Adana" in 1927. He became famous with the poem "Slowed Down Life," which appeared in the magazine "Istanbul" in 1933. His poems were published in various magazines, including "Reality," "Cultural Week," "Elevation," "Family," "Revolutionary Youth," "Seven Hills," and "Turkish Language."

Recognition and Legacy

Throughout his career, Dağlarca received numerous awards and accolades. In 1967, he was recognized as the "Best Turkish Poet" by the International Poetry Forum in the United States.

Dağlarca passed away at the age of 94 in a hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia. In his will, he requested that his home in Kadıköy be transformed into a museum. His house was donated to the Kadıköy Municipality, and it was opened as a museum in his honor.

Literary Beliefs

Dağlarca was a socialist who deeply respected humanity and human life. His art reflected this belief, and he remained independent from any specific literary movement or influence. He believed that art should be free and unfettered.
