Early Life and Military Career
Fazlollah Zahedi, an influential Iranian general and politician, was born in the 19th century. After graduating from military school, he served in the Cossack Brigade. In 1925-1926, he commanded a brigade in Rasht.
Head of Gendarmerie and Arrest
From 1927-1935, Zahedi led the Iranian gendarmerie. During World War II, allegations of collaboration with German-Nazi agents led to his arrest by British forces in 1943 and exile to Palestine for three years. He subsequently resided in France from 1947-1949.
Post-War Appointments
In 1949, Zahedi returned to Iran and was appointed Chief of Police. Two years later, he became Minister of the Interior. During the coup d'état in August 1953, which overthrew the Mossadegh government, Zahedi played a key role.
Prime Minister and Later Career
From 1953-1955, Zahedi served as the Prime Minister of Iran. He later represented Iran as a permanent delegate to the European division of the UN.
