Early Life and Education
Federica Mogherini was born in Rome, Italy, on 16 June 1973. Her father, Flavio Mogherini, was an Italian set designer and film director. After graduating from a classical high school, Mogherini held a part-time job at a call center. She then pursued a degree in political science (scienze politiche) at the Sapienza University of Rome, earning a degree in political philosophy. As part of the Erasmus program, she studied political philosophy at the Institute for the Study and Research on the Arab and Muslim World (IREMAM) in Aix-en-Provence, France.
Political Career
Early Involvement and Rise within the Democratic Party (1996-2013)Mogherini began her political career in 1996 by joining the Young Left organization. In 2001, she entered the National Council of the Democrats of the Left, later becoming a member of its National Board and Political Committee. She worked as a coordinator in the party's Foreign Relations Department from 2003 onwards. In 2007, she joined the Democratic Party and held the post of Secretary for Equal Opportunities in its Secretariat in 2009. By 2013, Mogherini had risen through the ranks of the Democratic Party, becoming a member of the National Secretariat, the Institute of International Affairs, and the Council for Relations between Italy and the United States.
Legislative Experience (2008-2014)
In 2008, Mogherini was elected to the Chamber of Deputies during the XVI Legislature of the Italian Republic. She served as Secretary of the IV Commission (Defense) and participated in the Parliamentary Delegations to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Western European Union and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In 2013, she was re-elected to the XVII Legislature, serving on various committees related to foreign affairs, defense, and relations with the European Union.
Mediation Mission in Kyiv (February 2014)
In February 2014, Mogherini traveled to Kyiv as part of a NATO Parliamentary Assembly delegation to mediate the ongoing conflict between President Yanukovych and the opposition. Her experiences during this mission shaped her views on the Ukrainian crisis, which she later shared in an article published in L'Unità.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (2014)
Appointment and TenureOn 22 February 2014, Mogherini was sworn in as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government led by Matteo Renzi. She held this position until 31 October 2014, when she assumed the role of High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
Focus on the Middle East
During her brief tenure as Foreign Minister, Mogherini paid a visit to refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan and called for an end to armed conflict in Syria. She also emphasized the need for a political solution to the Middle East crisis based on the principles of the Geneva Accords.
High Representative of the European Union (2014-2019)
OverviewOn 1 November 2014, Mogherini took on the newly created role of High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. She served in this capacity until 30 November 2019. As High Representative, Mogherini played a leading role in the EU's foreign policy and security agenda, representing the bloc in international negotiations and crisis management.

Mogherini is married to Matteo Rebesani, a close supporter of Walter Veltroni. They have two daughters, Caterina (born 2005) and Marta (born 2010). Mogherini enjoys reading novels, poetry, and traveling. She is fluent in English and French, and has some proficiency in Spanish.
