Federico Fazio: A Tall and Talented Defender
Early Career and Rise to ProminenceFederico Fazio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and began his professional career with Buenos Aires-based club Ferrocarril Oeste. Fazio's exceptional height (195 cm) played a pivotal role in his career, giving him a significant advantage in aerial duels and earning him nicknames such as "Slim" and "Tower."
Move to Sevilla
In January 2007, Fazio joined Spanish club Sevilla, but his path to success was not as smooth as in his native Argentina. Initially a backup, the Argentine defender eventually broke into the starting lineup due to injuries to Sevilla's other central defenders.
Fazio became an important part of the team, contributing to Sevilla's second consecutive UEFA Cup triumph. He made his La Liga debut on August 25, 2007, and helped Sevilla defeat Getafe 4-1. Fazio also played a key role in Sevilla's victory over Real Madrid in the 2007 Supercopa de España.
Scoring Prowess and a Red Card Debacle
On May 7, 2008, Fazio scored his first goal for Sevilla in a 3-0 victory over Racing Santander. A week later, he netted his second goal against Real Betis in a 2-0 triumph. Notably, in both matches Fazio played as a defensive midfielder.
In a subsequent move, Fazio joined Tottenham Hotspur in August 2014. However, his debut match against Manchester City ended in disappointment as he received a red card for a foul in his penalty area.
Loan Return to Sevilla and Move to Roma
Fazio returned to Sevilla on loan in January 2016, but his second stint was marred by a red card in his debut match. In August 2016, he joined Roma on loan and was subsequently bought by the Italian club for €3.2 million in July 2017. Fazio extended his contract with Roma until 2020.
International Career
Despite having only two caps for the senior Argentina national team, Fazio made his mark at the youth level. He won the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2008 Olympic Games with the Argentine squad.
