Early Life and Career
As the Cross Deacon to Grand Prince Vasily Ioannovich, Ivan Zherebyaty served in the highest echelons of the Muscovite court. During Vasily III's reign, he transitioned to the role of Metropolitan Deacon.
Association with Maksim the Greek's Circle
Zherebyaty's intellectual pursuits led him to join the circle of Greek scholar Maksim the Greek. Alongside Ivan Beklemishev and Vassian Patrikeev, he engaged in theological discussions and criticized the political affairs of their time.
Conflict with Metropolitan Daniil
Financial disputes brought Zherebyaty into conflict with Metropolitan Daniil. The rift between them escalated, creating tension within the ecclesiastical hierarchy.
Involvement in the Maksim Zarenin Case
When Maksim Zarenin was accused of heresy, Zherebyaty became one of the first subjects to be interrogated. He revealed Beklemishev's criticisms of Vasily's foreign policy and informed of the Grand Prince's attempt to use him to implicate Maksim.
Betrayal and Punishment
With Maksim informing the authorities of Zherebyaty's remarks against Vasily, the deacon's fate was sealed. Despite initially denying the allegations, he was forced to admit his guilt. As punishment for his insult to the throne, Zherebyaty's tongue was cut out, and he was subjected to a flogging in 1525.
Legacy
Zherebyaty's ordeal serves as a chilling reminder of the consequences of dissent in the repressive environment of 16th-century Muscovy. His life illustrates the fragility of power and the risks of challenging authority.
