Early Life and Education

Vasiliy Vasilkovich Nizhnik was born on February 27, 1935, in the village of Symonovychy (now in Belarus) to a farming family. He attended schools in Symonovychy, Vulka Symonovychska, and Drohichyn, graduating in 1952. In the same year, he enrolled at the Pinsk State Teachers' Institute, majoring in history.

Teaching and Research

After graduating in 1954, Nizhnik worked as a teacher in the village of Vydobor. In 1955, he began teaching in Drohichyn district. Concurrently, he pursued a correspondence course at the Department of History of Minsk State Pedagogical Institute named after M. Gorky from 1964 to 1967.

Nizhnik commenced scientific research in 1957, collecting dialect, folklore, and ethnographic material. In 1962, he established a collaboration with linguist Nikita Ilyich Tolstoy, Tolstoy's great-grandson.

Academic Career

In 1968, Nizhnik enrolled in the postgraduate program at the Institute of Linguistics named after Yakub Kolas of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences. He completed the program in 1971 and joined the Dialectology Department of the same institute. In 1981, he was promoted to Senior Researcher.

In 1973, Nizhnik successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation titled "To the Lingvogeography of the Western Polesie."

Research Interests

Nizhnik is a renowned specialist in the history and dialectology of Polesie. His research spans a wide range of fields, including dialectology, linguogeography, lexicography, Slavic studies, folklore, ethnogenesis, glottogenesis, sociolinguistics, and toponymy.

Honors and Recognition

In recognition of his significant contributions, Nizhnik was awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2000.

Publications

Nizhnik is the author of over 200 academic works in his areas of expertise. His publications have had a profound impact on our understanding of the language, history, and culture of Polesie.
