Félicien David: A Musical Journey
Félicien David, a renowned French composer, embarked on his musical endeavors as a chorister in the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral in Aix-en-Provence. In 1829, he assumed the leadership of the choir, but recognized the need for further musical training. He embarked on a journey to Paris, where he enrolled in the Conservatoire de Paris.
Conservatory Years and Sen-Simonist Influence
During his time at the Conservatoire (1830-1831), David studied under esteemed instructors such as François Joseph Fétis, François Benoist, and assisted Napoléon Reber in his private harmony class. However, his academic pursuits were interrupted by his fascination with Sen-Simonism, a philosophical movement. When the movement faced persecution, David, along with other adherents, left France for the Middle East.
Oriental Influences
David's sojourn in the Middle East profoundly influenced his musical compositions. The exotic melodies and themes he encountered found their way into his works, including his ode-symphony "Le Désert" (1844), oratorio "Moïse au Sinaï" (1846), and opera "Lalla-Roukh" (1862). These compositions showcased the fusion of Western musical traditions with Eastern influences.
