Biography of Felipe Asturias
Felipe Asturias, the third child of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Spain, was born on January 30, 1968, at the Nuestra Señora de Loreto clinic in Madrid. He was born as the heir to the Spanish throne. Felipe was born after his parents already had two daughters, Infanta Elena (born on December 20, 1963) and Infanta Cristina (born on June 13, 1965). At birth, Felipe received the title of Infante. His godparents were Count of Barcelona Juan de Borbon and Queen Victoria Eugenia, Felipe's great-grandmother.
Succession to the Throne
On the day his father was proclaimed king (November 22, 1975), Infante Felipe became the heir to the throne. On November 1, 1975, he was granted the titles of Prince of Asturias, Prince of Girona, and Prince of Viana. On his 18th birthday, January 30, 1986, Felipe took an oath of allegiance to the Constitution and the King in the Spanish Parliament, fully embracing his role as the heir to the Spanish crown.
Educational Background
Infante Felipe completed his secondary education at Santa Maria de los Rosales school in Madrid in 1984. He then spent a year at Lakefield College School in Canada. From September 1985 to July 1988, His Royal Highness attended the Military Academy in Zaragoza, the Naval School in Marin, and the Air Force Academy in San Javier. From October 1988 to June 1993, Felipe studied law and economics at the Autonomous University of Madrid. In May 1995, Prince Felipe earned a master's degree in international relations from Georgetown University in the United States.
Marriage and Family
Prince Felipe is married to Her Royal Highness Princess Letizia of Spain, who was born Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano. On November 1, 2003, the royal palace unexpectedly announced the engagement between Prince Felipe and journalist Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano. The formal engagement took place on November 6, where Felipe presented Letizia with a white gold engagement ring, and Letizia gifted Felipe with white gold cufflinks with sapphires and a book by Spanish literature classic Mariano José de Larra, "The Page of King Enrique the Weak." They held a press conference for 250 journalists from over 10 countries following the engagement.
After the engagement, Letizia moved into Zarzuela Palace. The wedding took place on May 22, 2004, at the Santa Maria la Real de La Almudena Cathedral in Madrid. It was the first royal wedding to be held in this cathedral. The ceremony was televised in many countries, and approximately 1.5 billion people worldwide watched it.
On October 31, 2005, Princess and Prince of Asturias welcomed their first child, Infanta Leonor, at the Ruber Clinic in Madrid. Her baptism took place on January 14, 2006, with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia serving as her godparents. On September 25, 2006, it was announced that Princess and Prince of Asturias were expecting their second child in 2007. Their second daughter, Infanta Sofia, was born on April 29, 2007. Her baptism occurred on July 15, 2007.
