Flavio Cotti: A Distinguished Swiss Leader
Early Life and EducationFlavio Cotti was born and raised in Ascona, Switzerland. He attended a Benedictine school in Sarnen before pursuing higher education. Cotti earned a degree in law from the University of Fribourg.
Legal and Political Career
After graduating, Cotti became a lawyer and notary in Locarno. His political journey began in 1964 when he was elected to the Locarno City Council. Three years later, he entered the Grand Council of Ticino, where he served until 1975.
Cantonal Government
In 1975, Cotti was appointed to the Ticino government, where he held various positions including Head of the Departments of Economy, Justice, Military, and Internal Affairs. He also served as President of the Cantonal Council in 1977-1978 and 1981-1982.
National Politics
Cotti's national political career began in 1983 when he was elected to the Swiss National Council. From 1981-1984, he chaired the Christian Democratic People's Party of Ticino, and from 1984-1986, the Swiss Christian Democratic People's Party.
Federal Council
On December 10, 1986, Flavio Cotti was elected to the Federal Council, Switzerland's highest executive body. He served until 1999, holding various portfolios including Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and Head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs.
Presidency
During his tenure in the Federal Council, Cotti became President of Switzerland twice, in 1991 and 1998. He played a significant role in Switzerland's foreign policy, promoting European integration and neutrality.
Legacy
Flavio Cotti retired from politics in 1999. He left a legacy as a respected and experienced leader who contributed greatly to Switzerland's national and international standing.
