Early Life and Amateur Career
Floyd Mayweather Jr. was born on February 24, 1977, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His destiny as a boxer was evident from his earliest years. "I was boxing in the crib," he recalled. "As I grew older, I started working out on different things like doorknobs. I first put on gloves when I was about seven or eight years old."
Mayweather's amateur career was highly successful, with a record of 84-6 in the featherweight division. He won the Golden Gloves tournament in 1993, 1994, and 1996, as well as the National Police Athletic Games and the U.S. Championships in 1995. It was during his amateur career that he earned the nickname "Pretty Boy."
Olympic Controversies and Professional Debut
Mayweather qualified for the 1996 U.S. Olympic team by defeating Oscar Sanchez twice in qualifying bouts. At the Olympics, he defeated Bakhtiyar Tileganov of Kazakhstan in the second round, edged out Arthur Gevorgyan of Armenia 16-13, and beat Lorenzo Aragon of Cuba 12-11. In the next bout, he lost a controversial 12-11 decision to Serafim Todorov of Bulgaria (a decision that the U.S. team protested).
Despite the Olympic setback, Mayweather emerged as one of the top prospects in boxing. He lived up to the expectations by becoming the first member of the 1996 Olympic team to win a world title as a professional.
Early Professional Career and Rise to Stardom
Mayweather's professional debut came on October 11, 1996, in Las Vegas, where he knocked out Roberto Apodaca in the second round. In his next fight, he outpointed Reggie Sanders. Mayweather had a busy 1997, winning 10 fights, nine of them by knockout.
WBC Lightweight Championship and Beyond
In 1999, Mayweather signed with manager James Prince, who helped accelerate his career. His first fight under Prince's management was a victory over WBC mandatory challenger Goyo Vargas on March 18, 2000.
Mayweather continued his title reign with a technical knockout victory over Jesus Chavez and moved up to the lightweight division. In April 2002, he faced WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo and won a controversial decision. However, he defeated Castillo more decisively in a rematch later that year.
In 2003, Mayweather continued his winning streak, defeating Victoriano Sosa and Phillip Ndou before announcing his move to the welterweight division. His first opponent in this weight class was former WBO welterweight champion DeMarcus Corley, who he faced on May 22.
Boxing Style and Personal Life
Mayweather's boxing style is versatile. "I can brawl, box on the outside, counterpunch or lead," he said. "I can find a way to win against any opponent."
Outside of boxing, Mayweather enjoys listening to rap music, bowling, going to movies, and dancing. His favorite movies are Italian mafia films such as "Casino," "Scarface," and "King of New York."
