Domenico Spinelli: Italian Antiquarian, Numismatist, and Archaeologist

Domenico Spinelli, an esteemed Italian antiquarian, archaeologist, and numismatist, stands out as a figure of significant scholarship in the early 19th century.

Antiquarian and Archaeologist

Spinelli's contributions to the field of antiquities were notable. He authored the treatise "Diss. sul origine dell'architectura sacra" (Treatise on the Origin of Sacred Architecture), which was published in Naples in 1831. In this work, he explored the origins and evolution of sacred architecture.

Spinelli also played a crucial role in the compilation of "Nummorum veterum Italiae quos ipse collegit. descriptio" (Description of Ancient Italian Coins Collected by Himself), a comprehensive catalog of ancient Italian coinage. This publication, augmented by the contributions of Cavedeni, was published in Naples in 1812.

Astronomical Observatory Director

Beyond his antiquarian and archaeological pursuits, Spinelli also made significant contributions to astronomy. In 1812, he was appointed director of the astronomical observatory at Capodimonte, located outside of Naples. Under his leadership, the observatory became a center for astronomical research and observation.
