Franco Gulli: Italian Virtuoso
Early Life and EducationFranco Gulli, a renowned Italian violinist, was born into a musical family in Trieste. He began his violin studies under the tutelage of his father, also named Franco Gulli, a pupil of Otakar Ševčík and Jan Maršak. After completing his studies at the Trieste Conservatory in 1944, he honed his skills at the Accademia Chigiana under Arrigo Serato and in Switzerland with József Szigeti.
Concert Career and Collaborations
As a soloist, Gulli performed throughout the world. Notably, he formed a remarkable duo with pianist Enrica Cavallo, who became his wife in 1950. Together, they performed for over half a century. Additionally, Gulli collaborated with the Italian String Trio alongside Bruno Giuranna and Amedeo Baldovino, and later with Giacinto Caramia.
Recordings and Accolades
Gulli made numerous recordings throughout his career. He captured Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons," Beethoven's concertos, and works by Mendelssohn, Paganini, and Prokofiev. Notably, with Enrica Cavallo, he recorded all of Beethoven's sonatas. The trio also recorded the complete Beethoven trios. In 1995, the Gulli-Cavallo duo received the Saint Michael Prize in Trieste for their contributions to Italian music.
Teaching Career
In addition to his performance career, Gulli dedicated himself to teaching. He held positions at the Accademia Chigiana, the Lucerne Conservatory, and from 1972 onwards, at Indiana University. As an educator, he inspired countless students and left a lasting legacy in the world of music.
