Charles Clémencet, French Historian and Benedictine Monk
Charles Clémencet was a renowned French historian and Benedictine monk who made significant contributions to the field of historical scholarship.
Revising the "Art de vérifier les dates"
Clémencet's primary work was a revision and expansion of the monumental chronological treatise, "Art de vérifier les dates des faits historiques, des chartes, des chroniques, et autres anciens monuments, depuis la naissance de Notre-Seigneur." Initially, he made corrections to the 1750 edition prepared by Charles Clémencet. However, dissatisfied with his efforts, he published a thoroughly revised and expanded three-volume edition from 1783 to 1787.
Contributions to "Histoire littéraire de la France"
Clémencet played a pivotal role in the multi-volume "Histoire littéraire de la France." He completed the 11th volume, authored the 12th volume, and provided materials for the 13th volume. His contributions enriched the compendium of French literary history.
Continuing Bouquet's "Recueil des histoires des Gaules et de la France"
Clémencet continued the "Recueil des histoires des Gaules et de la France," a collection of sources on French history originally initiated by Martin Bouquet. This project enabled the preservation and accessibility of valuable historical documents.
Collaborating with de Bréquigny
After the suppression of the Jesuit order, Clémencet collaborated with the scholar de Bréquigny to publish "Catalogus MS codicum collegii Claromontani" (1764). This catalog contained descriptions of manuscripts from the Jesuit college of Clermont.
