Biography of Francois Hollande

Francois Hollande, the President of France since May 2012, has been a party activist since 1979. At 51 years old, Hollande has never been known for having big political ambitions. It seemed that he was content with a bureaucratic career, carrying out tasks for his mentor, former Prime Minister Lionel Jospin. Hollande took on the task of defending his position as the First Secretary of the French Socialist Party (FSP) and simultaneously increasing his wife's chances of becoming a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections.

In November 1997, Hollande was elected as the First Secretary of the FSP during the party congress. He made sure that no one within the party tried to challenge Jospin, and he succeeded. After Jospin lost the presidential elections in 2002, Francois Hollande unexpectedly became the leader of the FSP. The subsequent victories of the Socialist Party in regional council elections and later in the European Parliament elections went to Hollande's head. In the summer of 2004, he announced that he did not rule out running as a candidate in the presidential elections in spring 2007. However, Hollande later tempered his ambitions.

Currently, he hopes for his wife, the sharp-tongued Segolene Royal, to become a candidate for the French presidency. Hollande and Royal live together in a civil union and have children.
