Frank Macchia: A Multifaceted Musical Master

Born and raised in San Francisco, California, Frank Macchia was immersed in music from a young age, beginning with clarinet lessons at the tender age of ten. His musical journey soon expanded to include the saxophone, flute, and bassoon.

Early Musical Endeavors

By the age of fourteen, Macchia had delved into composition, writing jazz and classical works for his high school band, orchestra, and local jazz ensembles. Renowned bandleader Mike Vax employed his services during this period. In 1975-76, Macchia composed a series of works at the intersection of classical and jazz, which were performed by the San Francisco Symphony and local professional musicians as part of the "Summer Music Workshop Program." He also composed the overture for his high school's graduation ceremony.

Berklee College of Music: A Time of Growth

In 1976, Macchia enrolled at the Berklee College of Music, where he honed his skills on saxophone with Joe Viola, Joe Allard, and Steve Grossman, while studying arranging and composition under Herb Pomeroy, Phil Wilson, Greg Hopkins, Tony Teixeira, and Ken Pullig. From 1976 to 1980, Macchia performed in and led some of the school's finest ensembles. He was awarded a grant to compose a 90-minute jazz-classical suite for large ensemble.

Beginning of a Professional Career

After graduating from Berklee with a degree in composition, Macchia began teaching at the college at the age of twenty. Simultaneously, he performed throughout New England with his group "Booga-Booga." In 1981, Macchia returned to San Francisco, where he worked as a musician and composer-arranger for the next decade.

Collaborations with Renowned Artists

Over these ten years, Macchia collaborated with such legendary artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Rita Moreno, Tony Bennett, Jack Jones, Clare Fischer, Chuck Mangione, and the Temptations. He was also an active member of local ensembles such as the Bay Area Jazz Composers Orchestra, Mike Vax's Great American Jazz Band, Royal Street, Dick Bright's Orchestra, and the Melotones.

Original Compositions and Critical Acclaim

In 1989, Macchia released a recording entitled "Maximum," featuring original compositions that spanned a wide range of styles, from new wave to polka. The album received critical acclaim, with the Oakland Tribune naming it one of the top ten albums of the year.

International Tours and Film Scoring

In 1991, Macchia embarked on a concert tour of Germany. Upon its conclusion, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he has resided ever since. From 1992 onward, Macchia has composed for numerous film and television projects, including "Superman Returns," "Pirates of the Caribbean 3," "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," "Transformers," and "X-Men 2."

Recent Works and Continuing Success

In 2003, Macchia completed his most recent album, "The Galapagos Suite," inspired by a trip he and his wife, Tracy, took to the Galapagos Islands. In January 2010, he released "Folk Songs for Jazzers," which features original jazz arrangements of well-known folk songs performed by top American musicians, including Trey Henry, Kevin Porter, and Ray Frissby.
