Frederica Sagor Maas was an American writer, playwright, and screenwriter. Born in New York City on July 6, 1900, she was the youngest child of Russian Jewish immigrants. Her mother, Agnes Zagorska, came from a merchant family and was a graduate of Moscow University. Frederica's father, Arnold Zagorsky, had to leave Moscow due to a decree prohibiting Jews from residing without a permanent address. As a result, the entire family, including Frederica and her two sisters, moved to New York.

Early Life and Career

Frederica Sagor Maas attended Columbia University, graduating in 1923 with a degree in journalism. Despite her degree, she spent her entire creative life working as a screenwriter. In the same year, she began her career at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a screenwriter before moving on to Paramount Pictures.

Work in Hollywood

As a screenwriter and playwright, Frederica Maas collaborated with Hollywood actors such as Greta Garbo, John Gilbert, Barbara Kent, and Emil Jannings. Some of her notable works include the films "The Plastic Age" (1925) starring Clara Bow, "Flesh and the Devil" featuring Greta Garbo, and "The Way of All Flesh," for which Emil Jannings won his first Academy Award. Her final film in her career was "Miss Pilgrim's Progress" (1941), which was based on her own story and featured Betty Grable and marked Marilyn Monroe's debut film.

Personal Life and Later Years

In 1927, Frederica Sagor Maas married screenwriter Ernest Maas, and their marriage lasted nearly 60 years. However, they did not have any children. At the age of 99, Frederica published a book with the same title as her last film, which described the era of black-and-white and color cinema, as well as the history of silent and sound films in Hollywood.

On January 5, 2012, Frederica Maas passed away at the age of 111 years and 6 months. At the time of her death, she was the 44th oldest living person in the world and the second oldest in the state of California, where she resided.
