Friedrich Schnitzler: A Legacy in Agriculture and Politics
Early Life and EducationFriedrich Wilhelm Schnitzler, a prominent landowner, entrepreneur, and politician, was born in Ohnastetten, Reutlingen, Germany. He earned a diploma in agricultural management and became a certified expert in wildlife damage assessment.
Political Career
From 1962 to 1974, Schnitzler served as a district councilor and deputy mayor in Ohnastetten. He also represented his district and served on the local and communal council after Ohnastetten became part of Sankt Johann. In January 1962, he became president of the Reutlingen Agricultural Association. In 1975, he merged it with the Münsingen Association to form the Reutlingen District Agricultural Association, which he chaired from 1975 to 1992. Schnitzler also established the Baden-Württemberg Landowners' Association and became its first parliamentary lobbyist.
Agricultural Advocacy
As a representative of the Reutlingen farming community, Schnitzler advocated for agricultural policies, particularly in dairy farming. He lobbied for reforms and organized events that gained national attention. He played a key role in establishing the Sankt Johann Agricultural Association and its annual Candlemas gatherings on February 2nd. Schnitzler's eloquence and oratorical skills made him an effective advocate.
Business Endeavors
Beyond politics, Schnitzler was also active in the dairy industry. He held leadership positions in the Reutlingen Dairy Factory and the local dairy producers' association. He served as chairman of the Supervisory Board and Managing Board of Südmilch AG, Germany's largest dairy producer. Despite financial challenges in the early 1990s, he successfully navigated a difficult situation and eventually sold the company to what is now FrieslandCampina Group, forming Campina GmbH.
Personal Life and Recognition
Schnitzler lived on a dairy farm in Ohnastetten with his wife and son, Frank Christoph Schnitzler. In 1984, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contributions to the nation. Friedrich Schnitzler passed away in 2011, leaving behind a lasting legacy in agriculture and politics.
