Biography of Gabriel Sigmar
Gabriel Sigmar is a German politician and member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands, SPD). He served as the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony from 1999 to 2003 and as the Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety from 2005 to 2009. On November 13, 2009, he became the chairman of the SPD.

Early Life and Education
Gabriel Sigmar was born in Goslar, Lower Saxony, to a nurse and a municipal servant. His parents divorced when he was only three years old. After completing his education at a local high school, Sigmar joined the army. Upon his discharge, he enrolled at Georg-August University in Göttingen, where he studied politics, sociology, and the German language. He graduated in 1988 with a degree in teaching.

Political Career
Sigmar's interest in politics began in 1976 when he joined the Socialist Youth of Germany - The Falcons (Sozialistische Jugend Deutschlands – Die Falken). He quickly rose through the ranks, eventually leading the organization's branch in Goslar and later becoming the leader of the district branch in Braunschweig. In 1987, Sigmar entered the district council of Goslar and became its leader by 1991. A year before that, he was elected as a member of the Lower Saxony parliament and later became its president. He served as a representative of the SPD in the parliament twice, in 1998 and 2003.

In 2005, Sigmar was elected as a member of the Bundestag, representing the Salzgitter-Wolfenbüttel district in Lower Saxony. He was re-elected to this position in 2009. On December 15, 1999, Sigmar succeeded Gerhard Glogowski as the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony. However, in February 2003, the CDU surpassed the SPD in the Lower Saxony parliamentary elections, leading Sigmar to lose his position.
Ministerial Role and Party Leadership
In 2003, Sigmar became a member of the presidium of the SPD and held this position until 2005. He also served as the deputy chairman of the SPD's Lower Saxony branch. Sigmar left the party's presidium to join the government and was appointed the Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety in Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition government.
Officially, Sigmar is not married, but he is known to be in a civil partnership. He lives with his partner, a dentist, and helps raise her daughter from a previous marriage. In 2009, the SPD suffered a devastating defeat in the federal elections, receiving their worst result since 1949. The CDU formed a coalition with the Free Democratic Party of Germany (Freie Demokratische Partei, FDP), leaving the SPD without a place in the government. The party's chairman at the time, Franz Müntefering, decided to step down, and on November 13, Gabriel Sigmar was elected as the new chairman of the SPD with an overwhelming majority of votes (94.2%).
