Gaetano Casati: Italian Explorer

Gaetano Casati, a distinguished Italian explorer, embarked on a remarkable journey in 1879. As a former officer in the Bersaglieri, a renowned Italian military corps, he set out to explore the African continent.

Explorations and Encounters

Casati's expedition focused on the Bar el Ghazal basin in Central Africa. He visited the lands of the Nham-Nham and Monbuttu peoples, gaining invaluable insights into their cultures and customs. In 1883, he joined forces with Dr. Wilhelm Junker and was graciously welcomed in Lado by Emin Pasha, who sought his assistance in military operations against the Mahdists.

Capture and Rescue

In 1886, Casati's fortunes took a dramatic turn when he arrived in Bunyoro, only to be imprisoned. Sentenced to death, he was ultimately liberated upon news of Henry Morton Stanley's approach.

Joining Stanley's Expedition

Joining Stanley and Emin Pasha, Casati played a pivotal role in their successful journey to the safety of Bagamoyo on December 3, 1889. Throughout this perilous expedition, he meticulously recorded his observations on the political, commercial, and ethnographic aspects of the Upper Nile region.

Publications and Legacy

Casati's valuable contributions to the fields of geography, meteorology, and anthropology were published in the "Bolletino della Società d'Esplorazione" from 1883 to 1888. Furthermore, he penned the acclaimed work "Dieci anni in Equatoria e ritorno con Emin-Pascha" (1891), which chronicled his decade-long adventures in Equatoria.
