Paul Francis Gadd was born on May 8, 1944, in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England. He began his musical journey at the tender age of 14, forming a guitar trio at London's Safari Club under the stage name Paul Raven. Despite touring with renowned artists such as Tommy Steele, Engelbert Humperdinck, and Cliff Richard, his early career was marked by obscurity.

Struggles and Breakthrough

In 1960, Gadd recorded his first song for Decca but faced a string of unsuccessful singles. He subsequently signed with Parlophone but again found limited success until 1961, when his covers of "Walk On By" and "Tower of Strength" gained traction in the English Midlands.

A brief stint as an assistant on the television program "Ready Steady Go" led to a fateful encounter with Mike Leander, who later became his manager and co-writer for his future alter ego, Gary Glitter.
