Early Life and Education
Garth Nix, an Australian fantasy author, was born on July 19, 1963, in Melbourne, Australia. He grew up in Canberra, the national capital.
Government Service and Military Career
After briefly working for the Australian government, Nix embarked on an extended trip to Europe. Upon returning home in 1983, he pursued a degree in Literary Studies at the University of Canberra. During this time, he served as a part-time soldier, known as a "weekend warrior," for four years in the Australian Army Reserve.
Publishing Career and Literary Foundation
After earning his bachelor's degree in 1986, Nix worked in a bookstore and later moved to Sydney. He became entrenched in the publishing industry, progressing from a sales manager to a publicist and ultimately a senior editor at a major international publishing house by 1991.
Travel and Freelance Writing
In 1993, Nix left the publishing world to travel extensively throughout Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. He returned to Sydney in 1994 and worked as a public relations consultant. In 1996, he co-founded the company "Gotley Nix Evans Pty Ltd."
Return to Writing and Literary Agency
In January 1998, Nix departed from "Gotley Nix Evans" to focus exclusively on writing until May 1999. He then joined Australia's largest literary agency, "Curtis Brown," as an associate agent. However, in 2002, he resumed his role as an independent author.
Personal Life and Other Works
Nix currently resides in Sydney with his wife, Anna, and their two sons, Thomas and Edward. In addition to his novels, Nix has written theatrical restaurant shows, short stories, and three books in the "Very Clever Baby" series. He also authored the novelization of the "The X-Files" episode "The Calusari," published by "HarperTrophy" in June 1997.
