Biography of Harry S. Metcalfe
Early Life and EducationHarry S. Metcalfe was born in 1957 and raised in Oviedo, Florida. In 1981, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of North Texas. He then went on to obtain a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1985. In 2000, Metcalfe completed his Ph.D. in Humanities at Saybrook Graduate School, under the supervision of Hungarian linguist Béla H. Bánáthy. His doctoral dissertation focused on the design of social systems elements and organizational development.
Professional Career
Metcalfe began his professional career as a family psychotherapist, working with adolescents and their families in short-term rehabilitation programs. From 1987 to 1989, he served as the head of the employee assistance program at Tandy Corporation. He then collaborated with Ashland Inc. from 1989 to 1998, where he developed and implemented another project for the benefit of workers and led a team to implement corporate wellness programs. In 1998, he founded InterConnections, LLC, a consulting firm in Ashland, Kentucky.
Starting in 2003, Metcalfe taught at the School of Education at Saybrook University as a specialist in organizational systems. He also engaged in research work. Between 2004 and 2009, he provided instruction for the Federal Executive Institute, the Office of Personnel Management, and the U.S. Federal Government.
From 2005 to 2009, Metcalfe trained future Master of Business Administration students in the Bhavana Marshall program in Bangalore, India. In 2011, he became a distinguished faculty member at Sullivan University. In the same year, he joined the professorial faculty at Aalto University in Finland, where he taught courses on systems thinking as part of the Master's program in creative sustainability.
Contributions and Recognitions
Metcalfe was the former president of the International Society for the Systems Sciences (ISSS), serving from 2007 to 2008. During his tenure, he chaired the ISSS meeting in 2008 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The meeting of ISSS members resulted in the publication of the work "General Systems Research," which Metcalfe edited. The work was published in the journal "Systems Research and Behavioral Science." From 2010, Metcalfe held the position of president of the International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR). Prior to this, he served as the vice president of the executive committee of IFSR since 2002.
Personal Life
Harry S. Metcalfe resides in Ashland, Kentucky. He is married to Teresa A. Daniel. The couple enjoys hiking, traveling, and organizing cross-country skiing races with their two sons.
