Gavin MacLeod, born Allan George See on February 28, 1930, was an American actor whose stage name was chosen for its memorability. Hailing from New York, he attended Ithaca College and served in the U.S. Air Force before pursuing an acting career while working at a radio station.

Breakthrough Roles in Film

MacLeod's debut came in the 1958 prison drama "I Want to Live!" After impressing director Blake Edwards, he landed a role in the 1959 film "Operation Petticoat" alongside Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. This breakthrough established his talent, leading to another film with Edwards, "High Time."

Television Success

In addition to his movie career, MacLeod became a household name through various television roles. His performance as Joseph "Happy" Haines in "McHale's Navy" gained him popularity, while his portrayal of Murray Slaughter in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" earned him two Golden Globe nominations.
