Gennady 'Geno' Adamia: Georgian Military Commander in the Abkhaz War
Gennady "Geno" Adamia was a Georgian military commander who played a pivotal role in the 1992-1993 Georgian-Abkhaz War.
Leadership and Military Accomplishments
As the conflict erupted, Adamia assembled a volunteer force composed of Georgian locals. This unit would later become the 23rd Mechanized Brigade within the 2nd Army Corps of the Georgian Armed Forces. Adamia rose to the rank of Major General and became a key figure in the defense of the city of Sukhumi against Abkhazian forces. He also served as a member of the pro-Georgian Defense Council of Abkhazia, gaining significant support among his troops.
Tragic End and Legacy
On September 28, 1993, during the final days of the war, Adamia was killed in battle near the Kelasuri bridge in an attempt to launch a counterattack on Sukhumi, which had been captured by the Abkhaz army. His body was eventually recovered in November and interred at the Saburtalo cemetery in Tbilisi, a testament to his sacrifice and the esteem in which he was held.
