Friedrich Demmler
Early Life and Architectural CareerFriedrich Demmler was born in Berlin in 1804. He studied architecture at the Berlin Architectural Academy under Karl Friedrich Schinkel. In 1824, he was appointed to the civil service in Mecklenburg on Schinkel's recommendation.
From 1830 to 1851, Demmler designed and constructed numerous buildings in Schwerin, including the arsenal, the Grand Duke's Palace, the riding academy, and the theater. He became involved in the political movement and sympathized with the working class. He introduced an innovative payment system that distributed the profits from construction among the workers.
Dismissal and Political Engagement
In 1851, Demmler was dismissed from his position due to his political activities. After spending six years traveling through Europe, he returned to Schwerin and dedicated himself exclusively to politics. In 1859, he co-founded the National Society, and after 1866, joined the left-liberal German People's Party in Stuttgart. A decade later, he transitioned to the Social Democrats.
Election to the Reichstag
In 1877, Demmler was elected to the Reichstag. However, he resigned from his position a year later. He continued to be active in politics and remained a prominent figure in the German Social Democratic Party until his passing.
