Georg Michael Franz Serenus Adelbert von Kempelen

Georg Michael Franz Serenus Adelbert von Kempelen was a German mathematician and physicist. He was born on January 23, 1745, in Pressburg, Hungary. He studied at the University of Vienna and the University of Göttingen. In 1766, he was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Helmstedt. In 1788, he was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Halle.

Contributions to Mathematics

Kempelen made significant contributions to the fields of geometry and trigonometry. He introduced the term "geometric mean" in 1808 and the term "trigonometric functions" in 1770. He also developed a new method for solving geometric problems.

Honors and Recognition

Kempelen was elected a member of the Royal Society of London in 1787. He was also elected a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of France in 1791. In 1794, he was elected an honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences.

Later Life and Legacy

Kempelen died on March 25, 1804, in Halle, Germany. He is remembered for his contributions to mathematics and for his work in the field of mechanical engineering. He was a prominent figure in the scientific community of the 18th century and his work continues to influence mathematicians today.
