Biography of George VI

George VI, Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor, was born on December 14, 1895, in York Cottage, Sandringham, Norfolk. He was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. George VI received his education at Osborne and the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. In 1915, he became a sub-lieutenant on the warship "Collingwood" and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant for his participation in the Battle of Jutland in 1916. In March 1918, he transferred to the Royal Air Force and served as a pilot on the Western Front, eventually attaining the rank of flight commander. After the war, he studied history and economics at Trinity College, Cambridge, for a year.

In 1920, George VI became the Duke of York and on April 26, 1923, he married Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the daughter of the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. They had two children - Princess Elizabeth, born on April 21, 1926, and Princess Margaret Rose, born on August 21, 1930. The Duke and Duchess of York visited Uganda and Sudan in 1924-1925, and Australia and New Zealand in 1927.

After his brother Edward VIII abdicated on December 11, 1936, the Duke of York became King George VI and was crowned on May 12, 1937. In May and June 1939, the King and Queen traveled to Canada and visited the United States. During World War II, the royal couple regularly visited troops, military establishments, docks, and hospitals throughout the country. In December 1939, the King traveled to France to be with the British Army, and in June 1943, he observed Allied forces in North Africa from an aircraft. He also visited Algeria, Tripoli, and Malta. In 1944, George VI saw the shores of Normandy ten days after the Allied forces landed there. He visited southern Italy in July and Belgium and the Netherlands in October.

On February 1, 1947, George VI, the Queen, and the princesses embarked on a sea voyage to South Africa for a state visit. In 1948, the royal couple planned a trip to New Zealand and Australia, which was postponed due to the King's deteriorating health. In late 1951, the King underwent a major operation. George VI passed away on February 6, 1952, in Sandringham. He was succeeded by his eldest daughter, Elizabeth II.
