Danish Geodesist
George Frederik Carl Zachariae was a prominent Danish geodesist who made significant contributions to the field.
Military Service and Education
Zachariae initially served in the infantry before graduating from the Military Academy in 1861. He was then transferred to the General Staff and participated in the Danish War of 1864.
Academic Career and Geodetic Work
In 1866, Zachariae was appointed professor of topography and geodesy at the Military Academy. He dedicated himself to scientific research, particularly in astronomy and geodesy. During summer months, he participated in numerous related expeditions.
International Recognition
From 1884 onwards, Zachariae served as director of the Danish градусного измерения and became a member of the permanent commission of the International Geodetic Association.
Publications
In addition to numerous articles published in scientific journals, Zachariae authored several notable works, including:
- "Laerebog i Theorien om de mindste Kvadraters Methode" (1871 & 1887)
- "De geodaetiske Hovedpunkter og deres Koordinater" (1876)
The latter work, translated into German in 1878 under the title "Die geodätischen Hauptpunkte und ihre Coordinaten," is considered a significant contribution to the field of geodesy.
