George Forman: A Boxing Career and Life Transformation
George Forman, born on January 10, 1949, is an American professional boxer who competed in the heavyweight division. His sporting career is quite remarkable, as it began in a school for troubled teenagers where there was a decent boxing gym. Within three years, in 1968, he became an Olympic champion.
The Rise to Professional Success
Forman made his professional debut in 1969 and within six months, he had already secured 13 victories. With his towering height of 195cm and powerful hands, he gained a reputation as a tough boxer.
Becoming a World Champion
On January 22, 1973, Forman stepped into the ring against world champion Joe Frazier, who was known for his aggressive fighting style. Frazier lasted only 4 minutes and 35 seconds, experiencing six knockdowns. When Frazier went down for the seventh time, the world witnessed the crowning of a new heavyweight champion. Forman held onto his title until October 30, 1974, when he faced the legendary Muhammad Ali in the ring. Ali's technical skills led to a knockout in the eighth round, marking the first downfall for Forman.
A Life Transformed
The second major turning point came in 1977 when Forman fought against Jimmy Young and lost again. He later shared, "I felt Christ awakening within me. I stood under the shower and was born again. I praised the name of God. Hallelujah, hallelujah!" Forman left boxing and became a preacher. He built a church in Houston, established a youth center, and traveled across the country to collect donations. His ten years away from the ring, spent reflecting on God and tending to his lawns, transformed George Forman.
A Comeback and World Championship
In January 1987, with just one year left until his 40th birthday, Forman revealed his desire to return to the ring and become a world champion once again. Boxing associations initially denied Forman the opportunity to compete, but the issue was resolved after his long-time promoter, Bob Arum, filed a complaint in court. After a year of training and significant weight loss, Forman returned to the ring and won 24 consecutive fights, all by knockout.
Finally, Forman achieved his goal of becoming a world champion again, defeating Michael Moorer by knockout in the 13th round. Although he lost a controversial decision to Evander Holyfield, Forman was still recognized as the WBA heavyweight champion.
A Life of Service and Inspiration
Today, at the age of fifty, Forman has returned to his congregation, delivering sermons and helping the less fortunate. His youth center remains active, with children excitedly hanging onto his mighty shoulders whenever Joe visits. As for boxing, some may say he has calmed down, but others would argue otherwise. Larry Holmes, inspired by Forman's achievements, even challenged him, believing that being slightly younger gave him a better chance.
