The Oldest Couple to Ever Say 'I Do'

British couple George Kirby and Doreen Luckie became the oldest newlyweds in history when they tied the knot at the grand age of 194 years and 281 days. Proving that love knows no age limit, the centenarian duo from Sussex exchanged vows after being together for an impressive 27 years.

A Lifetime in the Making

George, a 103-year-old former RAF veteran, proposed to his 91-year-old partner Doreen on Valentine's Day. The couple's wedding ceremony took place at the Langham Hotel, owned by George's son, Neil Kirby. With 50 guests and a representative from the Guinness Book of Records in attendance, they celebrated their union at the ripe old age of 194 years and 281 days.

Love Never Grows Old

George and Doreen's story began in 1988 when they met through a seniors' social group. George, then 76 and recently divorced, and Doreen, who had been widowed for three years, found a spark between them.

A Lasting Union

After moving in together in 1990, George finally popped the question on February 14, 2015. "I was so happy when she said yes," George recalls. "We've been so happy together, and now we're going to be together for the rest of our lives."

A Life Well Lived

George, born in London in 1912, served in the Royal Air Force for 25 years as a physical training instructor. A skilled boxer, he won all 60 of his fights. After retiring from the RAF in 1958, he worked as a restaurant manager, chauffeur, and gardener before finally retiring at the age of 94.

A Dedicated Mother and Grandparent

Doreen, born in Brixton in 1923, spent much of her career as a shorthand typist for the Attorney General at the Temple, transcribing documents and court proceedings. She even typed up the transcripts for the Kray twins and the Moors Murders trials involving Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. To stay active, Doreen attends weekly yoga classes by the sea.

A Charitable Occasion

Instead of traditional gifts, George and Doreen requested that their guests donate to their chosen charities, the Royal Air Force Association and the RAF Benevolent Fund. "Things don't mean as much to people of our age, so we would rather raise money for those who need it," Neil explained.
