George Robert Phillips "Spanky" McFarland was born in 1928 in Dallas, Texas, USA. He gained fame as an American actor, especially known for his role as Spanky in the popular comedy series "Our Gang".

Early Life and Career

George's journey into showbiz began when his aunt Dottie submitted his photo to a magazine seeking child actors. His parents, Robert Emmett and Virginia McFarland, were supportive of his acting aspirations. In 1932, George made his debut as Spanky in "Our Gang", capturing the hearts of audiences with his lovable and mischievous character.

Rise to Fame

Spanky quickly became one of the key characters in "Our Gang", delighting audiences of all ages with his grumpy yet endearing personality. He continued to portray Spanky for over 10 years, growing up in front of the audience's eyes while maintaining his comedic charm. In 1942, he made his final appearance as Spanky in "Unexpected Riches" before the series transitioned to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

Post-Acting Life

After his successful acting career, George joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 24. Upon his return, he made several attempts to revive his acting career but was not as successful as before. He eventually found work at a non-alcoholic beverage factory and later worked in sales, selling electronics, furniture, and even wine.

Later Years and Legacy

In the late 1950s, George made a brief return to television with the children's show "Spanky's Clubhouse" in Tulsa, Oklahoma. However, he never achieved the same level of success as his earlier career. He made his final television appearances in 1993 on "The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson" and the series "Cheers".

On June 30, 1993, George McFarland tragically passed away from a heart attack at the age of 64. Despite his struggles in later life, he remains a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. George McFarland is one of only two actors from "Our Gang" to have a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. He was also an avid golfer throughout his life.

In an interview, George admitted that he would not choose to relive his childhood fame for any amount of money, as it overshadowed the rest of his life. Nevertheless, his portrayal of Spanky continues to bring joy to audiences, and his legacy as a talented child actor lives on.
