George Price Boyce: A Pre-Raphaelite Artist and Architect
Born in Camden in 1826, George Price Boyce was the son of a wine merchant. After attending school in Chipping Ongar, he studied in Paris. Initially pursuing architecture, a life-changing encounter with watercolorist David Cox in 1849 sparked his passion for painting.
Influences and Pre-Raphaelitism
Boyce's early works reflected Cox's influence. However, he gradually developed his own meticulous style, drawing inspiration from the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1849, he met Thomas Seddon and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, followed by William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais in 1853.
Travels and Collaborations
In 1854, Boyce traveled to Venice with critic John Ruskin. Two years later, he visited Switzerland. Boyce also collaborated with Seddon on a painting trip to Dinan in 1853 and journeyed to Egypt with Frank Dillon in 1861 and 1862.
Focus on English Landscapes
From the late 1850s, Boyce's work primarily focused on English landscapes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1853 to 1861. His diary serves as a valuable source of insights into Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
Legacy and Family
George Price Boyce was the elder brother of artist Joanna Mary Boyce (1831-1861). His contributions to the Pre-Raphaelite movement and English landscape painting ensure his significance in British art history.
