Early Life and Education
Alexander Ivanovich Rozhdestvensky, a distinguished Russian poet and translator, was born on January 26, 1923. He completed his medical studies at the 1st Moscow Medical Institute in 1938.
Military Service
Rozhdestvensky played a significant role in the Great Patriotic War, serving as a platoon commander, field medic, and leading surgeon in various medical battalions. He actively participated in the Battle of Moscow, the Belorussian operation, the Königsberg operation, and the Harbin-Kirin offensive campaign. His bravery earned him the Order of the Red Star and several medals. Despite his war injuries, he was a second-group war invalid.
Literary Career
Rozhdestvensky's literary journey began with the publication of his first poems in the anthology "Smolensk" in 1944. He was known for his exceptional translations of Émile Verhaeren's poetry, as well as the works of Indonesian poets, including Amarzan Ismail Havid. Rozhdestvensky's contributions to literature were recognized with his membership in the Union of Writers of the USSR in 1974.
Later Life and Legacy
Rozhdestvensky spent many years living and working in Tarusa, a town located in the Kaluga region of Russia. He continued to write and translate poetry until his passing in 1994. Rozhdestvensky's literary legacy remains an enduring testament to his artistic brilliance and his unwavering commitment to language and culture.
