Childhood and Education
Born into a teacher's family, Sergei Nikolaevich Mikhalkov began publishing poems in periodicals from 1925. In 1927, he graduated from the literary department of the ethnology faculty at Moscow State University.
Early Career
Mikhalkov worked as a teacher, senior technical editor, and artist-polygraphist for the publishing house "Novaya Derevnya." He also served as an editor and later as a film director at the "Mosfilm" studio.
Wartime Service and Literary Beginnings
During World War II, Mikhalkov joined the people's militia, worked for a divisional newspaper, and directed for the Central Ensemble of the Navy and a front-line theater. It was during this period, in 1942, that he began writing prose.
Post-War Career
After the war, Mikhalkov became a professor at the Literary Institute from 1954 onward. He married fellow writer Olga Romanovna Miroshnichenko, who became a member of the Writers' Union of the USSR.
Personal Life
In the 1970s, Mikhalkov and his wife resided in the housing cooperative "Soviet Writer." He was laid to rest at the Vagankovo Cemetery.
