Early Life and Education

Mikhail Matyushin was born in Russia and fought in World War II. He went on to graduate with a degree in history from Bashkir State Pedagogical Institute named after K.A. Timiryazev in 1952.

Research and Discoveries

Archaeological Expeditions

Matyushin conducted extensive archaeological expeditions from 1952 to 1989, spanning Bashkiria, the Southern Urals, Ukraine, and Tajikistan. He held leadership roles in various archaeological detachments and expeditions, including the 2nd Neolithic Detachment of the Bashkir Expedition and the South Ural Expedition of the Institute of Archaeology.

Anthropogenesis and Ecological Crises

During the 1960s, Matyushin proposed a hypothesis of anthropogenesis that emphasized the role of mutagenic factors in the emergence of humankind. He identified five ecological crises during the Holocene that significantly impacted cultural and civilizational shifts.

New Understanding of Productive Economy

Matyushin's research shed light on the path of productive economy (agricultural practices) into Europe, suggesting a route through the Southern Urals and Eastern Caspian region. This finding is supported by genetic and ethnological studies.

Academic Advancements

Doctoral Studies

In 1964, Matyushin earned his Candidate of Sciences degree with a dissertation on "Mesolithic and Neolithic of Bashkiria." He completed his doctorate in 1987 with a dissertation titled "Stone Age of the Southern Urals: Pre-Urals. The Problem of the Formation of Productive Economy."

Leadership and Influence

Matyushin served as chairman of the Russian Archaeological Society and the Section of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He played a pivotal role in fostering a scientific understanding of the origins of Russian and global history among Russians.
