Biography of Gertrude Kappel
Gertrude Kappel was a German opera singer (soprano). She was born in Halle and initially trained as a contralto. However, it became clear that she was more suited for a soprano voice. In 1907, Gertrude made her stage debut as Leonore at the Hoftheater Hanover and worked there for 14 years specializing in dramatic roles.
Professional Career
From 1922 to 1927, Gertrude performed at the Vienna Staatsoper, collaborating with Richard Strauss and other members of the local theater company. She also sang at Covent Garden from 1912 to 1914 and returned to London in 1924 for two more years. Gertrude excelled in roles such as Brünnhilde, Isolde, Sieglinde, Senta, Marschallin, and Elektra. She also performed in French and Italian productions. In London, she faced stiff competition from Frida Leider.
Gertrude Kappel participated in the Salzburg Festival in 1922, where she was widely acclaimed for her portrayal of Donna Anna. She also shined in the same role at the Munich State Opera. In 1928, she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Isolde, followed by memorable performances as Ortrud, Fricka, Brünnhilde, Marschallin, and Elektra.
Later Years and Legacy
Despite her exceptional singing talent, Gertrude Kappel received less recognition than she deserved due to the presence of renowned singers such as Kirsten Flagstad and Marjorie Lawrence. In 1933, Gertrude returned to the role of Isolde in San Francisco, and she retired from the stage in 1937.
Gertrude Kappel passed away in 1971 at her home near Munich. Despite her international success, she left behind very few recordings of her singing. Only 16 records were released in 1911 by the 'Favorite' studio, and another six were released in 1924 by 'Grammophon'. It is known that Gertrude recorded three more records for 'Grammophon', but they were never released.
