Gevorg Beglarovich Dzhavukyan: Armenian Linguist and Academician

Gevorg Beglarovich Dzhavukyan was an Armenian linguist and academician at the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. He made significant contributions to the fields of general linguistics, comparative linguistics, history, and theory of world and Armenian linguistics.

Academic and Professional Career

Dzhavukyan graduated from Yerevan State University in 1941. From 1945 to 1949, he served as a senior lecturer at Yerevan State University. He became a docent in 1949 and a professor in 1958. He also headed the Department of Foreign Languages from 1948 to 1957. Dzhavukyan became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR in 1968 and a full academician in 1977.

Research and Publications

Dzhavukyan's research primarily focused on general and comparative linguistics, history and theory of world and Armenian linguistics, connections between ancient Indo-European languages and languages of the Near East, history of the Armenian language, dialectology, classification of Armenian dialects, and the structure of modern Armenian.

Awards and Recognitions

For his contributions to linguistics, Dzhavukyan received prestigious awards, including the Order of St. Mesrop Mashtots, the Order of the October Revolution, the Order "Badge of Honour," the Movses Khorenatsi Medal, the "For Valorous Labour" Medal, and a silver medal from the Exhibition of Economic Achievements of the USSR. He was also a laureate of the State Prize of the Armenian SSR in 1988.
