Early Life and Education
De Kresz was born in Hungary and began his musical education at the Budapest Conservatory under Jenő Hubay, graduating in 1900. He further studied in Prague with Otakar Ševčík and in Brussels with Eugène Ysaÿe.
Early Career
De Kresz began concertizing in 1906, holding the position of concertmaster for the Tonkünstler Orchestra from 1907 to 1909 and the Bucharest Symphony Orchestra from 1909 to 1915. Concurrently, he taught at the Bucharest Conservatory.
Berlin Years
In 1915, de Kresz moved to Berlin, where he held the prestigious position of concertmaster for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1917 to 1921. He also taught at the Stern Conservatory from 1919 to 1923.
Life in Canada
In 1923, de Kresz moved to Toronto with his wife, pianist Nora Drysdale. He performed with her in a duo and with cellist Boris Hambourg in a trio. De Kresz also led his own small chamber orchestra from 1930 to 1934 and played first violin in the Hart House Quartet. In 1930, he became a Canadian citizen.
Return to Budapest
From 1935 to 1947, the de Kresz family returned to Budapest, where he resumed teaching at the Budapest Conservatory and became director of the National Music Academy in 1941.
Final Years
In 1947, they returned to Toronto, where de Kresz continued his musical activities until his passing.
