Biography of Giancarlo Esposito
Giancarlo Giuseppe Alessandro Esposito was born on April 26, 1958, in Copenhagen, to an Italian father and an African-American mother. His mother, originally from Alabama, worked as a singer in a nightclub, while his father was a carpenter and stagehand from Naples. When Esposito was six years old, his family settled in Manhattan after living in Europe, other parts of New York, and Cleveland.

Early Acting Career
Esposito made his Broadway debut in 1966 at the age of eight, playing a young African-American slave in the play "Maggie Flynn" alongside Shirley Jones. At the time, he was not aware of any racial issues; he was simply thrilled to have a solo role. In the 1980s, he began appearing in small film roles, such as in "Maximum Overdrive," "King of New York," and "Trading Places," as well as TV shows like "Miami Vice" and "Spenser."

Collaboration with Spike Lee
In 1988, Esposito landed his breakthrough role as a college student in Spike Lee's film "School Daze." This marked the beginning of a four-year collaboration between Esposito and Lee, resulting in three more films: "Do the Right Thing," "Mo' Better Blues," and "Malcolm X." He also appeared in the film "Reckless" alongside Mia Farrow.

Television and Film Career
Esposito is known for his role as FBI agent Mike Giardello in the crime drama series "Homicide: Life on the Street." He appeared in the show from 1998 to 1999 until its cancellation. He also played the role of Sergeant Paul Gigante in the comedy series "Bakersfield P.D" (1993–1994). Other television shows featuring Esposito include "NYPD Blue," "Law & Order," "The Practice," and "Fallen Angels."
Throughout his career, Esposito has portrayed a wide range of characters, including drug dealers ("Fresh"), police officers ("The Usual Suspects"), political extremists ("Bob Roberts"), and even a demonic incarnation of the Greek god of sleep from another dimension ("Monkeybone"). He portrayed Cassius Clay in "Ali" (2001) and played Miguel Algarin, the friend and collaborator of Puerto Rican poet Miguel Piñero, in the film "Pinero" (2001). In the series "Breaking Bad," he portrays Gustavo Fring, a drug kingpin.
Personal Life
Since 1995, Esposito has been married to Joy McManigal and is the father of three daughters. He made his directorial debut with the film "Gospel Hill" (2008), in which he also acted and served as a producer. Currently, he is busy filming the series "Better Call Saul," playing the role of Gustavo Fring, a methamphetamine kingpin.
