Gianfranco Agostino Gardin: A Vatican Prelate and Archbishop
Early Life and PriesthoodGianfranco Agostino Gardin was born on March 15, 1944, in San Polo di Piave, Italy. He entered the Order of Friars Minor Conventual on October 4, 1965, and was ordained a priest on March 21, 1970. For 15 years, he taught moral theology in Padua. From 1980 to 1998, he edited the magazine he founded, "Credere oggi" (Believing Today).
Vatican Service
On July 10, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Gardin as Titular Archbishop of Cissa and Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. He served under Cardinal Franc Rode, the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation.
Ordination and Titular Archbishopric
On August 26, 2006, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Dean of the College of Cardinals, ordained Gardin a bishop. From November 1, 2007, Gardin served as Titular Archbishop of Torcello.
Archbishop of Treviso
On December 18, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Gardin as Archbishop-Bishop of Treviso. His successor was not appointed until August 2, 2010, and was American Joseph William Tobin.
