Biography of Ginny Sims
Ginny Sims was an American singer and film actress. She was born on May 25, 1915, in San Antonio, Texas. Initially, Sims aspired to become a pianist, but instead attended Fresno State Teachers College. During her studies, Sims began performing in student productions, singing in a sorority, and even formed a popular female trio on campus.
In 1932, Sims transitioned to a solo singing career and hosted her own radio program on a local radio station. That same year, she joined Tom Gerun's group in San Francisco, performing as a vocalist alongside other singers like Tony Martin and Woody Herman.
In 1938, Sims began performing with Kay Kyser's Orchestra, which allowed her to gain national recognition through radio shows and films with Kyser. She made her screen debut in the musical comedy "That's Right You're Wrong" in 1939, alongside Kyser and Lucille Ball, playing herself.
Sims was married three times. From 1945 to 1951, she was married to Hyatt von Dehn, the founder of Hyatt Hotels. From 1951 to 1952, she was married to Bob Calhoun. Finally, from June 22, 1962, until her death, Sims was married to Don Eastvold.
Sims earned starring roles in films such as "Here We Go Again" with Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, and "Hit the Ice" with Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. She also portrayed Helen Hoyt in the musical film "Broadway Rhythm" in 1944, alongside George Murphy. In the dramatic biopic "Night and Day" in 1946, Sims played the role of Carole Hill with Cary Grant and Alexis Smith.
In 1951, Sims hosted a local television show on Channel 11 (KTTV), featuring dance orchestras and talents from the army, navy, and military bases located near Southern California.
