Early Life and Career

Cardinal Giovanni Coppa was a distinguished Italian prelate who held significant positions within the Catholic Church throughout his career.

Apostolic Delegate

On September 1, 1979, Mgr. Coppa was appointed titular archbishop of Serta and delegate for papal representations in the Holy See's Secretariat of State. He served in this role until June 30, 1990.

Apostolic Nuncio

On June 30, 1990, Mgr. Coppa was appointed apostolic nuncio to Czechoslovakia. He remained in this post until Czechoslovakia's division in 1993. Subsequently, he held the positions of apostolic nuncio to Slovakia (January 1, 1993 - March 2, 1994) and apostolic nuncio to the Czech Republic (June 30, 1993 - May 19, 2001).

Cardinalate

On November 24, 2007, Mgr. Coppa was elevated to the rank of Cardinal-Deacon. He was assigned the titular diaconate of San Lino.
